Abstract: Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando furioso both celebrates human creativity and warns of the perils that can accompany journeys of the mind. This essay shows how Ariosto’s treatment of genius, madness and the self echoes the ideas of two of his contemporaries in the circle of Florentine Renaissance Neoplatonism: the scholars Marsilio Ficino and Cristoforo Landino.
