Scholars@IC: FAQ

What is the purpose of Scholars@IC?

Scholars@IC is intended to highlight the breadth of scholarly and creative activity taking place at Ithaca College, and to promote cross-campus collaboration. We anticipate there will be a number of audiences for Scholars@IC: the faculty/staff themselves, who will have a permanent record of their work; prospective students and faculty, who will be able to find out more about the scholarly activity taking place at the College; local media, who will have a place to find "experts"; and Institutional Research, which will have a central place to gather statistics.

Is Scholars@IC open to the general public?

Yes. Scholars@IC is open to everyone to view, browse, and search. Only IC Faculty and Staff, however, may contribute items.

I already have my publications on indvidual my faculty page. Why should I enter them again / Why can't you use that?

Individual faculty pages are just that--individual. They are unconnected islands of information, while Scholars@IC brings together all the scholarly and creative work going on at the college.--findable if you have a map, but otherwise They are like so many islands of information, while Scholars@IC is the main. Scholars@IC is meant to put your work in the context of the work of your peers--to provide one place

How do I log in?

Click on Create & Edit Entries (beneath the introductory text on the main Scholars@IC page, or in the right-hand sidebar on other pages), and enter the first half of your IC email address (the part to the left of the @ sign). The password is the same as your email password.

Can someone else enter my publications for me?

Yes. You may ask an administrative assistant to enter items on your behalf, or you may log a student into a computer using your IC email credentials (see above).

I'm an administrative assistant and I need to enter citations for my faculty. What do I need to do?

If you are a staff member (and not a student), write to the Scholars@IC administrator (adarby@ithaca.edu) and request SuperEditor rights. You will be set up to add entries on behalf of anyone in your department. Helpful tip: You can save yourself some typing if you ask your faculty members to login once themselves--this action will pre-populate all their personal information.

I'm a student/grad student, and I have been asked to enter citations for my faculty member/department. What do I need to do?

You will need to have the faculty member log in as themselves on the computer, and then follow the instructions.

I'm not sure how to enter my citations. Is there a help page?

Yes. Detailed instructions are available: Scholars@IC: How to Enter Data.

I've made a mistake in an entry. How can I fix it?

You may edit any entry that you have made, by logging in and selecting "Edit Items" from the right hand sidebar. Click on the "edit" button to modify your citation.

How do I add an image to the record?

If you would like an image to be associated with your citation (for example, the cover of a book, or a photograph of the artwork), please contact the Scholars@IC administrator (adarby@ithaca.edu).

Will you store my [book/article] for me?

No. Scholars@IC is a citation database, not an institutional repository of the items themselves. However, we will attempt to make a link from your citation to a copy of the item itself (see next FAQ).

How do I link from my record to the [book/article] itself?

Librarian subject specialists will routinely (at least once per semester) check to see if they can find a persistent link to the item itself. For example, they might link to our online library catalog (if we own a copy of a book), or to an article in one of the databases (if we have a subscription to the journal). Sometimes, it is not possible to link directly to an item. If you are keen to have your item linked immediately, please contact the Scholars@IC administrator (adarby@ithaca.edu), and we will try to expedite the process.

What if there is more than one IC faculty member co-authoring the same article? Should we both enter the citation?

No. Please only enter one citation per item.

How do I link from my personal web page to my items in Scholars@IC?

The URL at the top of pages in Scholars@IC is stable--you may link to any page from your own website.
