FAQS: Circ Policy FAQs

1. How do I pay a library fine?

  • Check, money order, or ID Express at the Circulation Desk.
  •  Cash may be used at the Bursar; the Library can transfer fines upon your request.
  • Unpaid fines/fees are automatically billed to the Bursar after 30 days. All charges are non-refundable after this point.
  • IC Affiliate and Staff fines/fees not paid within 30 days will be sent to Financial Services for collection at which point they will be non-refundable.

2. How do I renew an item I have checked out?

Renewing books, scores & multimedia: See also our online tutorial:

Renewing interlibrary loan items:

Log-in to your interlibrary loan account. Next, click on Checked Out Items, located under the View heading. Click on the transaction number of the item you wish to renew. Now, click on the red underlined Renew Request text. You will see a new due date located at the top left corner of the page.

The interlibrary loan office will notify you by e-mail if the renewal was denied by the lending library.

3. How many books may I have checked out at one time?

If you are an Ithaca College student, faculty, or staff, you may check out as many as you like.  Undergrads are limited to 15 interlibrary loan items at one time.

4. How much are fines for overdue items?

Policies regarding overdue fines are available on our Circulation Policy Table. Information about undergraduate student fines is also available on a flyer available from the Circulation and Multimedia Services Desks.

5. I received a notice about a library fine that don't think I should have, what should I do?

Fill out the Fine Appeal Form and include as much information as possible. Library staff reviews each fine appeal to determine whether or not the fines should be waived. Keep in mind that Circulation policy states that it is the patron's responsibility to know when an item is due. Loss of your receipt or not checking your accounts online are not reasons for fines to be removed. All fees that have been billed to the bursar or sent for collection are non-refundable.

6. When does the library send notices about patron accounts?

  • Courtesy notices are sent one week prior to the due date for books/scores
    • You may renew these items online via My Account.
  • Overdue notices are sent one day and then seven days after the due date for overdue items.
  • Notices of Fines/Fees are sent the day after fines are accrued and each week until fines are paid or transferred to the Bursar.
  • Patrons will be sent e-mail notices for all library transactions including recalls and interlibrary loans.

7. Why are fines/fees charged to bursar accounts?

The Office of Student Financial Services handles all student accounts. The Library sends a minimum of seven overdue/statements e-mail notices before fines and fees are transferred to the student's account.  Once the fines are transferred from Library accounts to the Office of Student Financial Services, the fines are non-refundable.
