Linking to Library E-Resources

Most databases provide URLs for linking to a full-text article from a citation list or other website. Unfortunately, every database company does it differently. This guide will lay out basic instructions for finding and using the full-text link in the major databases to which the IC Library subscribes. At this time, Lexis/Nexis does not have linking abilities.

To create a link to a journal article from database or on a publisher's website, you need to use publisher-produced persitent URLs.

Add the Proxy Information so that the article can be accessed from off-campus and on-campus for students using Apogee ResNet from residence halls.

You will have to put proxy information in the URL. The proxy information allows IC students, faculty and staff to verify their affiliation with Ithaca College in order to access licensed resources.

To prepend the proxy information, use the Link Generator above. It will prepend http://ezproxy.ithaca.edu:2048/login?url=. Please note that this will only work with persistent URLs.

Paste in the URL of the item you want to link to

Finding Persistent URLs--Examples

IC Library Catalog

Records in the IC Library Catalog now have persistent URLs available by clicking "Link to this record" in the yellow sidebar of an item's information page. Click this link and cut and paste the permanent URL from the pop-up window.

ARTstor

  1. Click the orange GO button to get started
  2. Do a search
  3. Right click on the thumbnail of an image you want
  4. Select "Generate image URL"
  5. Cut and paste the resulting url that pops up

Watch an 18 second video showing how to do this, or read the documentation on linking.

ebrary

To add a link for an individual ebook, copy the url from the address bar in your browser, and stick it in the Link Generator above.

To add a link for a specific chapter or page, navigate to your page and note the page number at the beginning of the parentheses:

img

Add &page=## to the end of the URL in your browser's address bar. So, you have a URL like:

http://ezproxy.ithaca.edu:2053/lib/ithaca/docDetail.action?docID=10232764&p00=rails&page=71

Now cut and paste this entire URL into the Link Generator above.

Paste the persistent link into the box, above.

Gale Databases (e.g., InfoTrac)

You cannot copy the URL from a LexisNexis search and expect it to work again later, or be "persistent." However, you can try this tool from LexisNexis.

ProQuest Databases

Search and display an article in ProQuest. Copy the "Document URL," located just above the Abstract on the article display screen; it is highlighted in this screenshot.

Paste the persistent link into the box, above.
