Use this guide to find resources on media effects, media ecology, media literacy, and children and the media.  It covers a range of disciplines, but especially: communications, education, psychology, and sociology.  The guide is not comprehensive but offers places to start.

  • Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC)
    A coalition of health care professionals, educators and parents who advocate against children's' exposure to commercialism through marketing. There are almost 30 member organizations.
  • Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY)
    Part of the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, CAMY. "monitors the marketing practices of the alcohol industry to focus attention and action on industry practices that jeopardize the health and safety of America's youth."
  • International Clearinghouse on Children, Youth & Media
    Located at NORDICOM, Goteborg University, Sweden, the Clearinghouse collects research on children and the media worldwide. Some books are free online; also check the library's catalog.
  • Kaiser Family Foundation
    KFF focuses on the major health care issues facing the U.S., as well as the U.S. role in global health policy.  The foundation provides statisical data, polling data, information, and analysis for policymakers, the media, the health care community, and the public.  (see issue: Media and Health)

  • Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC)
    Non-profit NGO located in Singapore that promotes media and communications in Asia. This membership organization offers research, publication and events.
  • Center for Social Media (CSM)
    School of Communication, American University. CSM is an organization that uses media for social action. The site includes many free documents including the Documentary Filmmakers' Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use, Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Scholarly Research in Communication, Honest Truths: Documentary Filmmakers on Ethical Challenges in Their Work, Code of Best Practices for Sustainable Filmmaking, and Clipping Our Own Wings: Copyright and Creativity in Communication Research.  See the "Documents" page for additional resources.
  • China Media Observatory (CMO)
    Created in 2006 by the Faculty of Communication Sciences at the University of Lugano in Switzerland, the CMO studies Chinese media. It generates research, newsletters, and other documents that are available through its website.
  • Media Ecology Association (MEA)
    Association that studies media ecology which is, "the relationships between media, consciousness, and culture in interdisciplinary, philosophical and historical contexts to examine our technological society."
  • Pew Internet & American Life Project
    From the website, "The Project produces reports exploring the impact of the internet on families, communities, work and home, daily life, education, health care, and civic and political life. "
  • Popular Culture Association - American Culture Association (PCA/ACA)
    Founded in 1971, and partnered with the ACA in 1979, the PCA/ACA is an organization that supports the study of popular and American culture. Journals produced include the Journal of Popular Culture and the Journal of American Culture.

    A national media watch group that monitors media bias and censorship.
  • Journalism.org: Project for Excellence in Journalism: Understanding News in the Information Age
    Site is provided by the Project for Excellence in Journalism and the Committee of Concerned Journalists. Includes a link to The State of the News Media Annual Report as well as other research reports and analysis.
  • Media Cloud
    Data tool from the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard that visulizes the flow of the media.
  • Media Education Foundation
    Organization that produces educational documentaries that examines American mass media's impact on society.
  • Media Education Lab
    Temple University program that focuses on media education through curriculum materials, publications, workshops, seminars, etc.
  • Media Matters for America
    Progressive news monitoring organization.
  • National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE)
    Organization focused on media literacy in the United States.
  • Newsflow
    Real-time map of news reporting from the MIT Center for Civic Media.
  • Newsy: Multisource video news
    According to the About page, Newsy is the, "only video news service that allows users to compare bias by highlighting nuances in reporting."
  • On the Media
    On the Media is a National Public Radio Program that reflects on how the media covered events in the weekly news. It also discusses issues in the media such as freedom of information .
  • Pew Research Center for People and the Press
    Organization that conducts national surveys on the politics and the media. Includes data sets, reports, and links to polls.
  • Project Look Sharp
    Project Look Sharp provides materials, training and support to help teachers prepare students for life in today's media saturated world. Project Look Sharp promotes the effective integration of media literacy and critical thinking into classroom curricula at all educational levels and instructional areas. Project Look Sharp also evaluates the effectiveness of school-based media literacy education.
