- Topical Resource List This breaks down the grantseeking process and the types of grants into topical categories. Many of these connect you to biblographies of relevant books and articles, which you must then track down, but where online resources are relevant the links are provided.
- Philanthropy Classification System The Foundation Center maintains a classification system that might prove useful. It helps clarify the population served, the organization type, and the Subject area, as well as support strategies. When clicking on any of these, be sure to wait for the "Hierarchy" at the bottom to fill in.
- 990 Finder It could be useful to look at the 990 tax returns of nonprofit organizations similar to the one you wish to find grants for, where you will find their donors listed.
- Gain Knowledge This section is worth exploring. See in particular the Special Topic Trends under Research, where you'll find many recent and free Foundation Center Publications.
GuideStar
- Most resources here must be purchased, but some features are free if you register (see Create Account button). Among the free features is an advanced search of 990 filings with a Keyword component so that in addition to searching specific organizations already known to you, you can enter terms likely to occur in the names of the types of organizations that interest you, limit the location by city and/or state, and retrieve all the nonprofit organizations with those words in their name. After selecting one you must scroll down past the data available only to subscribers to reach the 990 forms for that organization. Try to target organizations similar to your own and then check to see if and from whom they are receiving grant funding.
